How to calculate monthly power consumption, KW to electric unit kwh.

How to calculate monthly power consumption, KW to electric unit kwh,

Electricity unit calculation and KW to unit formula.

Electricity unit calculation and KW to unit formula.

          Hi friends today's topic is, Units consumed per month by electrical appliances, and how to calculate unit consumption.

      I have written a formula here, electrical Units is equal to, watts multiply by Hrs, multiply by 30 devided by 1000,

Electricity unit calculation formula

       Units =   Watts*HRS/1000*30

     what is this watt?

          watt rating of the used appliances and The time of appliance's use in Hours per day,  30 days of a month, the answer is our monthly power consumption.

         if  we remove this 30 days in formula, then this formula will give units consumed in a day, if we multiply it will 30, then this will be units consumed in a month,

        There is 1 more formula to calculate units,

   power consumption calculation

       Units = KW * hours * 30

         30 is same, hours is same KW is written in place of watt and 1000 is removed from the formula, if you use KW in place of watt, then 1000 will not be required, then this formula will be used, but as many appliances rating is in watt, using watt will be easy, so we will use this formula for calculation,

    electric power consumption

 calculation of units of many appliances,

         This is one example of calculation, suppose watt rating is 500 W, we use it daily 5 hours,if we calculate using this formula,

           Units = 500*5/1000*30 =75

       Then answer will be 75 units, means, if 500 watt appliance, is used 5 hours daily, then 75 units of electricity per month, will be consumed by appliance,

      Now suppose, rating of equipment is 2 KW, so conversion of 2 KW in watt will give 2000 W, so this 2000 W will be written, now suppose, it is used for 2 hrs per day, then answer will be 120 units using this formula, this means, a 2 KW equipment or rated for 2000 watts, if used for 2 hours daily, then it will consume 120 units, of electricity in a month,

          Now suppose, we use KW formula in place of watt formula, we will not change KW into watts, KW =2, hours = 2, so result is again 120 units, so you can use this watt  based formula or use KW based formula, answer will be same.

         I will use Watt formula, in further calculation, now we consider 1 house as sample and calculate unit consumption per month or electricity units consumed per month,

      Suppose,

1)      LED tube lights  5 numbers are used and one LED tube light is rated for 20 watts, they are used for 5 Hrs. per day,

2)      so consumption of unit for 1 tube light will be (20 watts *  5 hours daily* 30 / 1000 = 3 units),

           This means, 1 tube light, if used for 1 moth, will consume 3 units per month so consumption for 5 tube light will be, 3 * 5  =15 units, so 5 tube lights will consume 5 units of electricity in a month,

         Now washing machine load, suppose power of washing machine is 300 W, WM is also available in 250W or 350W, when we use the washing machine, total working time may be 1 hour, but motor will be ON only for half time, For remaing half time, water will be flowing, this means, motor runs only for half an hour, if it is used once in a day, motor will not run for full 1 hour, so electricity unit consumption, by washing machine will be, 300 watt * 0.5 hours per day/ 1000 * 30 days = 4.5 units,

      This means a washing machine, will consume 4.5 units electricity per month.

   water heater monthly electric unit

    Now water heater, rating of heater is 2 KW, so 2KW = 2000 watts after conversion, suppose heater is used 2 hrs daily, so answer will come 120 units, so this 2 KW heater, if used for 2 hours daily, then it will consume 120 units per month, water heater consume maximum power, if you have water heater, then a big part of the electricity bill is due to water heater or Geysers as its power is more.

     Now electric iron, also called Press, this is rated for 1200 watts, now suppose, we use iron for half an hour daily, when you use electric iron, it will not remain ON for full half hour, it will be 50% time ON and 50% time OFF, so we take 0.25 hrs in place of 0.5 hrs, as it is ON only for half the time of use,

        so calculation will be for 0.25 hours, so answer of this will be 9 units, this means an electric iron, rated for 1200 watts or 1.2KW, if used for half an hours daily, then it will consume only 9 units in a month, even if power rating is more, but electricity unit consumption is less, because it is used for very less time,

       Now fan, suppose we have 3 fans, each fan is rated for 80 watts, it is used average for 10 hours daily, fan working timing will be different, more use in summer, less or no use in winter, I took just average 10 hours for calculation, so if fan is used for 10 hours, then one fan, will consume 24 units as per  formula, then for 3 fans, consumption will be 3*24=72 units, these fans also consume to much units, as it is used for long hours, some times even for 24 hours, so 3 fans of 80 watts each, if used for 10 hours daily, then they will consume 72 units per month,

         Now, we will do calculation of unit for fridge, suppose power rating is 300 watts, it may be less or more depending upon size, I took 300W for calculation, Fridge remain ON for 24 hours, but if you check, motor remain ON for about one 3rd time, motor will be OFF remaining time, even it is used for 24 hours, but motor is ON for about 8 hours only, so 8 hrs. is considered here, electricity unit consumption of fridge, also depend upon, the number of times, door is opened, if you open door of fridge frequently, then it will consume more electricity, using this formula, answer will come 72, fridge also consume to much electricity, so a 300 watts fridge, if used for full day and motor is ON for 8 hours, due to automatic ON OFF, then fridge will consume 72 units per month.

        Now laptop, 65 watts rating considered here, is written on the charger of the laptop, that rating is taken here, if we use laptop for 10 hour per day, so answer as per this formula will be 19.5, means one laptop. with charger rated for 65 watts, will consume 19.5 unit electricity per month, if it is used for 10 hours per day, but if you have Desktop, desk top consume more power, then more watts to be taken here, as per rating of the desktop.

     Now we add units consumed by all equipments, 5 tube light consume 15 unit per month, washing machine 4.5 units per month, water heater 120 units per month, iron 9 units, 72 units by 3 fans, 72 units by fridge and 19.5 units of electricity by laptop, if you add up all these, we get 312 units of electricity consumption, this is approximate, as time of usage will change, so monthly electricity consumption, will be 312 units.

  monthly bill of appliances

  Now you will ask, how much money?

   As charge per unit is different at different places, may be Rs. 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 per unit, fixed charges also may be there, so it can be calculated based on charges, it is not calculated here, if unit cost is Rs. 6 per unit, then bill may  be for more than Rs 1800. then there will be fixed charges also, to be paid, No power factor penalty for houses, but if it is a business company, then extra charges will be there, this calculation is for houses.
